Plumbing is one of those things that you don't need to worry about until there is a problem. But a plumbing failure can have a huge effect on your quality of life.
There are quite a few common ways for plumbing to break or fail, and whenever any of them occur, you need to get the problem fixed as soon as possible. At the same time, though, you need to be careful that you hire an experienced plumber who is licensed to work in Georgia. Otherwise, you might end up with a so called "plumber" who does a poor job and causes even more damage.
One common issue that might come up is the presence of polybutylene pipes. Polybutylene, also known as PB, is a material that was used in some new installations up until the mid 1990s.
PB has a tendency to degrade in the presence of chlorine and some other trace elements in tap water. As a result, PB pipes will eventually leak and need to be replaced with a different material.
In 1995, Shell Oil, who made the pipes, had to settle a large class action lawsuit related to this leakage. If your pipes leak, then you might have PB in the pipes themselves or the fittings. A good plumber will recognize this and will be able to replace your old installation with a better material that won't leak.
Sometimes the problem is not the pipes, but something within the pipes causing a blockage. For example, it is quite common for tree roots to get inside underground pipes.
This can cause major problems. First of all, the roots usually get in through a gap near a fitting, and then their presence creates a blockage. That can make the pipe unusable.
This is a problem that needs to be fixed right away, and there are a few different ways for a plumber to do that. But the presence of the roots is a signal of a bigger problem: the pipe is weakening. There is a hole somewhere through which the root entered, and that hole is only going to get bigger.
That means the root will keep coming back again and the pipe is compromised. At some point, the pipe section will need to be replaced. The new pipe won't have holes to let in trees, and it's also possible to trim back the roots, so they won't come back as strongly.
There are many other problems that can arise. Your water heater might break down or need replacing, leaving you with cold water.
Your drains could clog in such a way that over the counter remedies are not effective. You could have a toilet that keeps running through the whole day, wasting water. Even something as simple as a dripping faucet can cost you a lot of money.
And if you do not take the proper steps to prepare your home for the winter, you might wind up with frozen or burst pipes when the temperature drops below freezing. This is especially concerning if you will be away from the house during winter.
The bottom line is that while your pipes will function normally most of the time, there are a lot of things that can go wrong. When they do, call us.
